Little Dieter Needs to Fly

Little Dieter Needs to Fly

In describing the door, explanation of why he opens and closes the door, Dieter becomes both the captor and captive in this few seconds. The freeze framing allows us to see both roles side by side, Dieter simultaneously Pathet Lao/Viet Cong and himself as a prisoner. As such, the door could be/should be experienced from the perspective of the captor and captive simultaneously as one engages with it, fluidly moving between both roles, free and unfree.

Final composite drawing, overlaying the simultaneity of experiences through the act of opening and closing the door. It is an overlay of my own drawing and iteration of feeling Dieter’s experience, hybrid digital/hand drawing.
