Open Air Museum, Not
This vertical studio began with a selection of a type, one of the many collections of architecture that exist in the world. For this project, the type chosen was ambiguous architecture, and how that is expressed structurally, spatially, materially, and perceptually. The five pieces of architecture, or readymades, that this type developed from were the Barcelona Pavilion, the Nordic Pavilion, the Kanagawa Institute of Technology Workshop, EC Pavilion, and San Lucas Pavilion.
From the selection of a type, sub types were developed and the matrix of ambiguous architecture expanded. The second selection was program, for this project a fashion and textile campus, with each readymade reprogrammed. Thirdly, a site was chosen; the campus was sited in Lisbjerg, Denmark, just north of Aarhus. The studio required a new building that brought the type and program together, unifying catalogue of readymades and their positions on the site.
